Finger Pointer Thingy |
Long about October of that same year, the Homeschooled Young Man asked if he could do his history on the couch with the dog, I told him as long as he got his work done. Then next thing you know he was under the kitchen table (his all-time favorite place) on the floor with the dog doing science. A short time later, he discovered fort making with sheets, blankets, and kitchen chairs to study in. These shenanigans nearly ended our homeschool career before it really got off the ground when Homeschool Dad saw what was going on. Because you know, homeschooling dad's think that learning can only be done in a straight backed chair, a desk and feet flat on the floor.
My homeschool décor has also changed; I have cute laminated quotes and pictures all around our homeschool bookshelves. They perk me up on a long day and get me through the tough times.
The picture below is from WWW.TheHomeschoolMagazine.com I've had it for years on my refrigerator and no matter how bad my day is, I can look at it and just laugh, I don't know why it makes me feel happy, but it is just so funny!
You can see how our homeschool has evolved over time, changed and morphed into something wonderful and unique to our family, now do you see why I was giggling so hard when being poked with the Finger Pointer Thingy? It is amazing how a little Finger Pointy Thingy can bring back so many memories.

Schoolhouse Teachers Homeschool
http://schoolhouseteachers.com/dap/a/?a=1054&p=https://schoolhouseteachers.com/member-resources/all-courses/ (The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, owner). Yet another
useful home education tool provided by http://thehomeschoolmagazine.com/. SchoolhouseTeachers.com is set up by graded sections, pre/K & elementary,
middle school and high school with drop down menus for all. You will find
everything for homeschooling with topics such as logic, math, science, history,
fine arts, Bible and many more electives as well as helps for the homeschool
mom.
http://schoolhouseteachers.com/dap/a/?a=1054&p=https://schoolhouseteachers.com/member-resources/all-courses/ is a must for all homeschoolers, whether you are a
boxed curriculum homeschooler, eclectic or unschooler this site has something
for your student with 400+ classses. Our homeschool has tended towards the
boxed curriculum (we have started branching out in recent years though) but it
was always missing something. I’ve found what was missing and it was
SchoolhouseTeachers.com, there are all sort of goodies to find on this site.
It just so happens
that my son was given an acoustic guitar as a gift and he has been getting
library books on how to play the guitar, but they have been either way over his
head or contained music that does not fit our family values. As we are
reviewing the Old Schoolhouse magazines website SchoolhouseTeachers.com we came
across the guitar lessons.
Mom & Dad have no trouble with reminding our son to practice his guitar because SchoolhouseTeachers.com is so much fun to use! |
The videos are AWESOME! It's great to go back and watch them again to get the finger movements down pat. |
Another area that I liked was the logic section. We have always struggled with teaching logic in our homeschool, so I was thrilled to see Logic on the drop down menu under middle school. I like how the lessons are set up so that my son can just go right in and get started. It has helped foster independence on his part. I know that we have a few years to go before college, but when I look at the SchoolhouseTeachers.com website, I’m thinking about how using this site will help our son out in the long run. Online college classes are the future for many of our children and what better way for them to be prepared than by teaching them in pre/k & elementary, middle school and high school with methods that they will continue to use down the road.
We plan to continue searching through all the goodies over the next year that SchoolhouseTeachers.com offers. Post and let me know what you think of the site and how it's enhanced your homeschool.
Have a great day!

Bridgeway Academy homeschool review
We were given an 8 week long program to review called Easy Essay from Bridgeway Academy. Scroll down on that page and Easy Essay is the 10th item down from the top. As a TOS Review Crew member I jumped at this chance because essay writing in our home has always been a chore! And you all know how much we like to do chores! UGH!!
The Easy Essay class meets for 90 minutes (TOS Review Crew has a shortened class time of 60 min) with 2-3 hours per week of homework. Easy Essay is for 9th-12th grade students. For successfully completing the Learning Lab course the student receives 1/2 credit elective towards high school graduation. The cost of Easy Essay is $275.00. Bridgeway Academy has a whole course line up at the online learning academy, with classes for all ages and they even offer Learning Labs for use in
Co-ops!
The class had a main focus of organization, structure and design and taught the basics of getting started in writing an essay. Things like brain storming for ideas, using Graphic Organizers, 3 point thesis, and the final class today will be over how to write a 5 paragraph essay in 45 min.
A lot of learning went on in this class, though there were a few glitches with the audio and recordings. The classes were done through Jigsaw Meeting, which is the platform that is used for the class. For some reason the classes were not all recorded (I think it was a Jigsaw Meeting issue and NOT a Bridgeway Academy issue). I do hope that before they do this again they will have the glitches worked out or go with another platform to carry the classes. We did have to miss a class due to a doctor appointment that was out of town and of course wouldn't you know it, that was one of the sessions that was not recorded. LOL...but I guess so many missed that class that Mrs. Kulp (the teacher) took the time to repeat the class for us all. That was very kind of her to do, especially since it was the class that my son was really eager to attend, it was on thesis statements and he has always struggled with writing those. That has been very annoying to my homeschooled young man.
Homework was assigned in each class and was due by Friday 5pm. This was all fine and good, but we did not always get the homework graded and sent back to us in a timely fashion. Sometimes it was not returned until just before class time, last weeks homework has yet to arrive. The comments on the homework were well done. A Debra Watson graded some of my homeschool young man's work and she had a few typos that I thought were very unprofessional such as MY instead of ME in wording. The comments were very helpful on the homework, here is a quoted comment from week 3 essay.
The homeschool young man has other classes that he is doing and he can't just scrap the day and start working on Easy Essay. I know we homeschoolers are suppose to be flexible, but once you get into the high school years, you have a different schedule than you did when the kids were in lower grades. My main dislike of this review was the turn around time on homework. Also there was no grading of the grammar/spelling in the essays, to me that should be included, I even correct grammar/spelling in other subjects in my homeschool.
Here is a quick overview of the program works with Easy Essay. Before classes started we got an email explaining how to get hooked up with the video chat called Jigsaw Meeting, it's FREE. The homeschool young man was able to get this all set up himself. We had some concern since we do not have high speed Internet (we have low speed country Internet lol), so we called Bridgeway Academy right away and tech support told us that if we could view the videos on the website we would be fine. They do have a test button to check to see if your connection is good enough. Sure enough no troubles. We have a web cam, but no headset with a microphone, so I found a decent priced one online at my FAV store. Mrs. Kulp then sent out an email with all the details of the class, syllabus, list of assignments that were due.
The first day of class Mrs. Kulp showed up about an hour early for class so that everyone could test out their equipment. We were totally stumped by the TALK button...(lol...at least for this household) on using the talk button, but we got that figured out right away.
I did like that fact that Bridgeway Academy and Easy Essay are taught from a Biblical worldview. Easy Essay works on teaching listening skills, verbal skills (talking back and forth to the teacher) and class participation. The teachers are licensed instructors, Mrs. Kulp is a licensed teacher of secondary education in the state of PA. I did not care for the fact that I could not hear what was going on in the class, so that made writing that portion of the review hard for me, I had to get a lot of info from the homeschooled young man. I will say this much, every time I walked by the screen and Mrs. Kulp what up there, she had a smile on her face :O) I also liked the parent letter that she sent out very early on in the class. Here is what it said. "I have an assignment for you! Please respond to this email stating your child's name, grade level and the biggest struggle you see, as their teacher/parent, with their writing. What is one goal that I can help accomplish over the next 7 weeks? Also, please identify what type of language arts curriculum you are using."
I personally think that Easy Essay $275 for a homeschooling family to spend on a 1/2 credit hour class is a lot of money, considering that in my area of the country a homeschool student could take a college class for $25.00 more and have 3 college credits and 1 high school credit. But as you can see taking the class has already helped my homeschooled young man in life. So you decided.

We have been super busy around here, finishing up the TOS Review Crew year, got a couple of really cool reviews to share with you in the coming days! Spent a few days out of town and have some neat things to post about when life slows down.
If you have the time, please pray for our son, he has some interesting irons in the fire and needs covered in prayer. We will have more details to share the week of Nov 5. But until then we would covet your prayers for the Lord's will in his life. And that the Lord would comfort him in whatever His will is.
Love that the trees are turning and the weather is crisp. Almost time for Campfire school! LOVE THAT TIME OF YEAR.
Take care,

PRICE REDUCTION Old Schoolhouse EXPO just $17.00
Experience the final days of homeschool encouragement 22-23, 2013 and read my review below of Andrew Pudewa session. "Can’t make the exact times and dates listed? You won’t miss out! The annual week long Schoolhouse Expo recordings will be available with the price of your Expo ticket. You will receive a link to the recordings after the expo week is complete." Don't miss the special pricing that is going on right now just $17.00 for the entire EXPO!! What a deal!
The homeschooled student listened to Mr. Pudewa and promptly informed me (in a nice manner) that he is a perfectly normal boy! Tapping his pencil and making nosies while doing school work is all part of being a boy!
What the homeschooled boy did not like about Andrew Pudewa's talk:
The audio took some time to get right and that took up a bit of time. I was very eager to listen as I had hurried up to finish my school work in order to listen.
What the homeschooled boy liked about Andrew Pudewa's talk:
I learned that boys and girls are different, even though it sure does seem to me that the world says we are all the same :O(
I liked the slides,
I like to stand up when I learn and my parents are always wanting me to sit down (I think they are changing their minds on this point).

Let's Make a Web Page Review
We were blessed to receive a 60 page Ebook from Motherboard Books called Let's Make a Webpage!. Let's Make a Webpage is designed for kids 8-12 years old. We did have to download a copy of the free trial version of The Coffee Cup Visual Site Designer software (you can get a FREE 30 day download, but after that it costs $49.00 in addition to the cost of the Let's Make a Webpage! Ebook) to make the web page. We had no issues with downloading this product, in the past we have had a few computer glitches when we have gotten download version of computer programs. BUT NOT with MotherboardBooks.com! This was simple to use. This was a super easy process for our 12 year old. I did nothing but tell him where to find the links in the Crew Review email, he did the rest. He made a very cute web page to surprise his dad. I think kids around 9 and under would need some adult supervision with this.
Let's Make a Webpage! software is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and later (sorry this does not work with Mac). Purchase price is $19.95.
Let's Make a Webpage! Ebook includes the following:
interview a person
download and set up the program
add text to a web page
create a table
put pictures on
how to add animations from the Internet
check browser, background and photos
add sound
add links
Post work
Upload to the Internet
taught independence (working alone, figuring things out)
taught creativity (coming up with backgrounds, sounds, pictures)
taught life skills (interviewing, talking, asking questions)
was a fun learning tool for learning as well as creativity
What this homeschool Momma did not like about Let's Make a Webpage!
It was pretty short, wish it had more to it. I do think it was worth the price. You have to use The Coffee Cup Visual Site Designer software (you can get a FREE 30 day download, but after that it costs $49.00 in addition to the Let's Make a Webpage! Ebook).
What this homeschool student liked about Let's Make a Webpage!
I liked how it told me how to do something, but not exactly what to do (I had to think it through myself).
I liked how I could make it my homepage (I surprised my dad with it when he got on the computer).
I thought it was pretty cool to design my own web page.
I did have fun with this review.
What this homeschool student did not like about Let's Make a Webpage!
I am at the upper age limits for this product, so it was pretty easy for me, but I think it would take some effort on the part of younger kids to use. Mom or Dad would definitely need to help the younger student.
I did not like how you had to buy other software to keep making more web pages. Mom talks about that software above.
So here you have it! A great way for your child to learn how to design their own webpage!
Lone Star Learning Math Review
The Large cards measure 11″ x 8.5″ $34.99
The Small cards measure 5.5″ x 4.25″ $29.99
Grades 1st-8th
We were given the small cards to review. I think at first our 7th grader thought, "Oh, yeah! Flashcards! YIPPEE!" Well by the end of the review he was telling me that
"The Target Vocabulary Pictures Math set 1 flashcards would be great for high school students that needed a math review."
What we liked about the Target Vocabulary Pictures Math Set 1 5.5x4.25 size cards:
PERFECT size for homeschool use (the larger size would be great for classroom teachers)
GREAT for on the go use in the car.
FITS perfectly in purse or bag to use while waiting at appointments.
FUN to play with.
DOES not feel like we are doing school when we use the cards.
HIGH quality flashcards, I don't see these falling apart anytime soon, they are laminated.
GREAT for all ages, recommended for 3rd-8th grade, but could be used with 1st-12th grade.
What could be better about the
Target Vocabulary Pictures Math Set 1:
STORAGE there is no box to store these in. I actually think that I am going to hole punch each card and put it on a ring for easy storage.
PRICE since I have an only child, these were a bit out of my price range, ($29.99 for 57 flashcard) but they are WAY COOL and if I had the extra money in my budget I would buy them for the coolness and fun factor to help with teaching math terms! We both actually learned several new terms using these flashcards.
ANSWER SHEET was on just plain paper, it was not on a flashcard type of paper or laminated and it started looking pretty wrinkled up after just the first week of use. So I laminated it myself and it's holding up well that way.
Paper Answer Sheet |
"Target Vocabulary Pictures Set 1 consists of math vocabulary presented visually to facilitate recall. Sets are not arranged by grade level. Please view sets to determine the appropriateness for your students."
How I Spent My Day & An Update On Me
The treat bags had gum, candy, suckers and chocolate in them, the black bag is special for one of the nurses that has Celiac Disease along with her children having it, so it's full of Hodgson Mill products and some other goodies. Hoping these treats are a blessing to them. |
So our day started out like this I took our son to Chuck E Cheese since he had 90 tokens to use up from the past and present school year, I always check the coupon section of the website for when they have token specials, usually 100 tokens are $20 which those last a long time. I give them for doing well on math speed drills or pop quizzes. Sometimes if work is done really well with no complaints I will surprise him with 1 or 2 tokens. He keeps them in a baggie so he can just grab them when we are going to be near a Chuck E Cheese and he can spend them. Sometimes he likes to save them up and spend a few hours playing, other times he wants to run in and play a few games of Skee-Ball. Chuck E Cheese also has Chuck E Cheese Rewards Calendars that you can print out and get 10 free tokens for turning them in, they have chore charts, homework charts and more.
They now carry GLUTEN FREE PIZZA too!! It comes pre-made and individually wrapped, so you know it's SAFE! What a blessing for our little ones as well as adults. I do not know the corn status of the pizza, you would have to check that out. They also have a GREAT salad bar too.
So on to my day, while our son was playing games and having fun, I was sitting at a table packing up treat bags for the nursing staff and doctors. I found some Gospels of John at the Christian book store, but they only had 2 on hand :O( I gave one to my surgeon, his first name is Peter and I wrote in the book that I would have given him the book of Peter, but John was so much more exciting to read ;-)
I was totally exhausted from my day of being out and about, plus I did not sleep but 2 hours the night before since I had to take a double dose of steroid meds for the blood test. I slept in the car on again off again. I had to be in town by 8am for a blood draw, slept for about 30 minutes in the car after that, went to the Christian book store, napped in the car for about 15 min, went to Chuck E Cheese, that was good since I was just sitting and not up and about. Then went to the grocery store, napped in the car for about 30 min after that and then delivered the goodies to 3 different places and napped in between those. This is all perfectly normal after having the surgery and then the infection. I should be back to normal by Summer. I actually feel pretty well, though if I over do it I KNOW IT! lol. I told my guys that I am not leaving the house for the next few days and will be sleeping as needed. I am still sore especially when I make the 100 mile trips to the doctors, and I did that 3 days in a row last week and I was hurting, felt like I was bruised on my entire torso from the bumpy roads.
We have some great products to review for The Old Schoolhouse Magazine Review Crew coming up so we will be working on those. School is going well, so glad that we skipped Christmas break so that our son could take a winter break while I had my surgery, it worked out well since I have had a longer recovery time. We started back to full time school this past week, while he was at Grandpa's house he dabbled in math, science, history and of course his favorite subject reading.
